Get to Know Elizabeth Nahl

Elizabeth Nahl is a Pre-K--Middle School Counselor with over 30 years experience. She is a strong leader who has served at every level of the union while simultaneously serving for 25 years on her local executive committee, including as President of the local and council. A proven organizer, bargainer, and mentor, Elizabeth is trusted by members and leaders throughout her building, local, council, state, and across our nation. In these capacities, she has been on the front lines of policy issues that educators across the nation regularly confront: funding challenges, addressing the disrupted learning crisis, attacks by anti-public-education entities, and more.

Elizabeth served seven years on the NEA Board of Directors, including representing NEA at Educational International twice. In 2019, Elizabeth was appointed to serve and subsequently to chair the Committee on Constitution, Bylaws, and Rules (CCBR): the committee tasked with ensuring the NEA RA business runs smoothly and equitably, which includes processing NEA RA business items.

As a professional leader, Elizabeth has served on her district’s school counseling leadership team and as a mentor for countless school counselors. As a passionate union advocate she has bargained local contracts for over 20 years and has held a variety of positions, including political action chair, local president, and council president. Known for her hard work and persistence through difficult times, she served seven years on the OEA Executive Committee and more than a decade on the OEA Board of Directors. Elizabeth is a true servant leader unafraid of learning unexpected things, at unexpected times, from new and unexpected people.

Elizabeth served as the council organizing chair for the state’s Red-For-Ed state day of action for student mental health in 2019. Elizabeth collaborated with ESP units and community partners, organizing local demonstrations in addition to joining the state rally of 20,000 advocates in Portland.

Elizabeth holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Vermont and a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology from Pacific University.
